Section 6 - Applications

Structural

Helmets used in structural firefighting must meet applicable minimum performance requirements for a state, region or country. The US requires compliance and certification to NFPA 1971. The latest revision became effective February 2000. Helmets designed and certified to meet this NFPA requirement will not comply with specific elements of any other NFPA standard.

ARFF

Air, Rescue, Fire Fighting (ARFF) defines applications specifically designed for US municipal and military airport fire departments. NFPA 1976 addresses the requirements for this unique segment of the fire service. Helmets designed and certified to meet this NFPA requirement will not comply with specific elements of any other NFPA standard.

Wildland

Wildland helmets are used in forestry fire fighting applications. US Forestry Firefighters use NFPA 1977 compliant helmets for Wildland applications. Helmets designed and certified to meet this NFPA requirement will not comply with specific elements of any other NFPA standard.

SAR/EMT

Search and Rescue/Emergency Medical Technician (SAR/EMT) is now developing a standard for head protection applications. Structural fire helmets, hard hats, specialty hard hats and other designs have been used due to little or no performance criteria. An NFPA standard will define and level out the field of products used in these applications.
