Fundraisers Take Advantage of Slow Traffic

Edgecomb, Maine (pop. 1,000) -- The Edgecomb Fire Department spent about 18 months raising money for a Bullard TIx from residents and summer tourists. The department’s most successful fundraising tactic was a six-hour boot drive through which firefighters appealed to people driving along Route 1.

Fire Chief Barry Johnston: “We are located on Route 1 on the Maine coast, and the summer tourist traffic will frequently slow traffic to a crawl. We set a mini pumper roadside with signs about our fundraiser. We used fireman’s boots, and as the cars passed, money would be dropped in the boots. This approach could be used for any event where traffic is slowed.”

Funding Tip -- Consider reaching potential donors where they will be a captive audience. Edgecomb firefighters found great success when they tapped into willing donors along Route 1.
