Thermal image of man with firearm

Interpreting the Image

This thermal image demonstrates how different heat signatures can reveal details of a scene and a person. The subject has a relatively cool, long rectangular object in his hand. He is holding it in a classic combat grip... the grip taught to police. His torso is significantly cooler than his arm, indicating that he is wearing something on his torso that is blocking more of his body heat than his shirt sleeves. The object on his torso has abdominal extensions and thin shoulders, similar to a body armor vest. Last, his head is cool on the very top and he has a military style haircut, just like a police officer.

In short, chances are, this thermal image is showing us a police officer... not a bad guy! During plain-clothes operations, this type of information could be critical to a safe resolution to the incident.

Tell Us What You Want To See!

As Bullard prepares to bring more thermal imaging tips, real-life stories and training topics to readers in 2008, we want to know what you want to see. We are primarily interested in the following:

  • Has a TI helped you save a life?
  • Have you had a “close call” that you were able to avoid because of a TI?
  • Are there specific applications for which you would like additional information on using your thermal imager?
  • Do you have questions about the technology of thermal imaging and what is in store for the future?
  • Has your department created a great training or SOP that you would like to share?
